How is a good violin bow?

As with violins, the violin bow must fit the structure and size of the violinist. Thus, at an early age, students' bows are smaller, and they grow gradually until they reach 4/4 size.

Taking as reference a violin of this size (4/4), the bow of the violin has a length of about 75cm, and weighs between 55 and 65 grams. These aspects are essential for the violinist to develop his activity in a productive way. A heavier bow can give a fuller and bulky sound, although it is slower at moving. A lighter bow, allows faster and more efficient execution in short notes, but loses sound in the most held notes.

It is also important to take into account the balance of the bow and the good distribution of his weight. Normally the gravity center of the violin bow is about 25 cm from the frog (not counting the endscrew), and is regulated by acting on the thickness and curvature of the wood. The weight must be well distributed along its parts so that the speed of the response is the same in any part of the bow.

The bowhair must be well cared. Usually a bowhair has 120 to 150 bristles, which must be renewed when they are worn out.

The wood most appreciated for the manufacture of bows is Pernambuco wood from Brazil. This wood is exceptionally resilient and flexible, allowing it to be sufficiently easy to handle to offer an extensive wealth of accents, inflections and nuances in order to take advantage of the movements of the violinist.
